Opening Day Kickoff Event

For the first time in the history of the PA Division, a ground breaking event will be taking place. The Division will be celebrating the official start of their 2009 minor league football season on the weekend of July 11th. On that Saturday, four teams will be hosting the Minor League Football Kickoff Classic in Harrisburg, PA. There will be two football games played on the same day, on the same field. The host facility for this event will be Susquehanna Township High School, which is the home field for the South Central Yard Dawgs.

The game schedule is as follows:
12:00 P.M. - Central Penn Piranha vs. Berks County Wild
4:00 P.M. - South Central Yard Dawgs vs. Chambersburg Cardinals

An event of this magnitude is unheard of at this level of football, or any other level. This event was conceived last fall season, and has been in the planning stages since the beginning of this year. Some of the 2009 PA Division teams participating in this event consist of the Central Penn Piranha, South Central Yard Dawgs, and Chambersburg Cardinals.

A silent sports auction, provided by PSA Charities and Fundraisers, will be available for fans to bid on sports items. Other notable event items include: Merchandise stand, custom face-painting (team logos available), individual team merchandise stands, and a wide selection of concessions.

Perhaps one of the most important features of this event will be the selected charity. The Minor League Football Kickoff Classic has developed a relationship with the Allegheny Valley School, and will donate a portion of the proceeds from this event to the Hummelstown Campus of AVS.

Since its founding in 1960, AVS has been providing compassionate care to some of our society’s most vulnerable citizens - children and adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities. AVS was established in western Pennsylvania to care for children with intellectual disabilities for whom a closing orphanage had been unable to find adoptive families. During the past 49 years, AVS has grown from a single site agency serving ten children in western Pennsylvania into a multi-faceted organization with programs and facilities that today serves more than 900 children and adults throughout the Commonwealth. Eighty-three percent of its residents are diagnosed with severe or profound intellectual disabilities and most also have multiple physical disabilities, medical complications and some have behavioral management needs.

AVS believes in the dignity of each person and his/her ability to grow, achieve and succeed. Their facilities are beautiful because they understand that the human spirit needs beauty in order to thrive. Its programs are challenging because they know that as human beings, we need to challenge each other in order to reach our potential. AVS residents live and work in environments that nurture life. They learn productive skills, become as self-sufficient as possible and build lasting friendships in the community.

Allegheny Valley School operates 127 programs and facilities across Pennsylvania including 17 in Dauphin and Lebanon counties. Locally AVS cares for 80 individuals and provides employment to more than 200 people.

AVS’ Hummelstown Campus is located on Middletown Road. The Campus is home to 26 children and adults and it is also the location of AVS’ central Pennsylvania day program center. Each day, residents of the Campus as well as individuals from AVS’ community group homes in Dauphin and Lebanon counties receive critical services at this location.

Medicaid is AVS’ primary source of funding. It covers AVS’ operating costs such as housing, food, utilities, medications, program services and the salaries of staff that provide care and treatment for its residents.

AVS relies on community support of its Capital Development Fund to help cover other expenditures including program expansions, specialized equipment, property, and facility renovations and improvements. Funds raised from the Pennsylvania Division Kickoff Classic will be contributed to AVS’ Capital Development Fund to benefit the individuals served in central Pennsylvania.

At the end of each game, there will be an awards presentation for the outstanding players. The following awards will be given: Game MVP, Offense MVP, and Defense MVP.

Event Quotes:

Todd McFarlane, South Central Yard Dawgs’ Owner: "I am excited to be the host team for something that is new and fresh for the League. I hope that with the help of the other PA Division teams and the League, we can make this Minor League Football Kickoff Classic a model for the rest of the League to use. I think this event will shine a new light on minor league football. Not only are we bringing four teams together on one day, but we are also helping out a local branch of the Allegheny Valley School in the Harrisburg area. For me and my players, and along with the rest of the PA Division, this is what football is all about. Football is brotherhood, and giving back to others that are not as blessed with the ability to play a game like we do every Saturday."

Ron Kerr, Central Penn Piranha Owner: "It feels great to be involved with this event. It was an idea that came from a coach on our staff. It was discussed at the divisional meeting, and everyone loved the idea. Todd ran with it, and here we are. I'm very excited, and I think we may be on to something great."
